Are you looking for a historic steam locomotive for your N-gauge model railroad layout that combines the distinctive look of the early Deutsche Reichsbahn with modern digital and sound technology? The Fleischmann 7170045 DRG Class 38 Steam Locomotive No. 3713 impresses with its distinctive olive-green paint scheme, the characteristic boiler without air deflectors, and a factory-installed DCC digital decoder.
As an Era II model, the locomotive evokes an interesting transitional period in German railway history. While many steam locomotives already bore the new lettering of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft, some were still in service in the traditional colors of the Länderbahn era. This special version makes the BR 38 3713 an attractive model for historic passenger and express trains.
The prototype for the Class 38 was based on the Prussian P8-class passenger locomotive. It was developed to meet the growing demands of passenger and express train service and went on to become one of Germany’s most successful steam locomotive designs.
By 1923, German locomotive manufacturers alone had built more than 3,700 units. The triple-coupled steam locomotive had an output of 880 kW and reached a top speed of 100 km/h when traveling forward and 50 km/h when traveling in reverse.
With a service weight of approximately 130 metric tons, including the tender and fully loaded supplies, the P8 was a powerful and versatile locomotive. The Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft later classified these locomotives as the Class 38.10–40.
A special highlight of the Fleischmann 7170045 is its rare-looking historical paint scheme. The conversion of the extensive DRG locomotive fleet to the new standard black-and-red paint scheme took several years.
As a result, numerous steam locomotives continued to operate in the earlier olive-green, reddish-brown, and black color schemes until around 1930, even though they had already been fitted with new Reichsbahn markings.
The BR 38 3713 captures this characteristic operational state. The boiler without air deflectors emphasizes the original appearance of the Prussian P8 and lends the model a special historical charm.
Unlike the analog version, the Fleischmann 7170045 comes factory-equipped with a permanently soldered-in DCC digital decoder. The sound version enables particularly lifelike model railroad operation and complements the steam locomotive’s historical appearance with appropriate ambient sounds.
The locomotive is driven by three axles. Two axles are equipped with traction tires and support the locomotive’s tractive force. The two-light headlight at the front provides lighting that matches the prototype.
With a length over buffers of 122 mm and a minimum operating radius of 192 mm, the steam locomotive can also be used on smaller N-gauge model railroad layouts.
The BR 38 3713 looks particularly impressive when pulled by contemporary passenger and baggage cars of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft. This allows you to assemble typical passenger trains of the 1920s and recreate the atmosphere of the early Era II on your layout.
Experience classic steam locomotive history with modern digital technology! Get the Fleischmann 7170045 BR 38 3713 in the olive-green DRG livery with DCC sound and expand your N-gauge collection with an exceptional Era II passenger locomotive.
