Description

From 1971, the Deutsche Bundesbahn put 398 class 218 series locomotives into service and used them in front of both passenger and freight trains. They are used on most non-electrified lines and reach a maximum speed of 140 km/h with an output of 1,840 kW.

The 218 series has gone through several color variations over the years. The first 218s were still delivered in the purple-red color scheme that was common for diesel locomotives. From 1975, the colors ocean blue/beige determined the external appearance of the locomotives.
