The Fleischmann 7560051 N scale electric locomotive 140 047-2 of the German Federal Railroad (DB) is a detailed replica of the class 140, one of the most versatile electric locomotives of Era IV. With its robust technology and characteristic design, this locomotive was the backbone of freight train traffic on electrified main lines for a long time.
The class 140, originally known as the E 40, was developed and mass-produced from 1957 by Krauss-Maffei, Siemens-Schuckert-Werke (SSW) and other manufacturers. With a top speed of 110 km/h and an output of 3,260 kW, it was specially designed for heavy freight trains. The absence of an electric brake and an adapted gear ratio made the locomotive ideal for use on main lines in the lowlands.
With over 800 units produced, the BR 140 carried the main load of freight train traffic for decades, but was also occasionally used for passenger traffic. From 1968, the E 40 was given the new class designation 140. It was only taken out of service by Deutsche Bahn at the end of 2016, making it one of the longest-lived electric locomotives of its time.
Era IV (1965-1990) was characterized by the modernization and restructuring of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. During this time, the class 140 was an indispensable locomotive for freight traffic and shaped the image of electrified main lines. With its striking design and versatility, it was a symbol of the reliability and efficiency of rail freight transport in this era.
The model of the 140 047-2 is equipped with a die-cast metal chassis, which ensures high stability and excellent running characteristics. The light changes in red and white depending on the direction of travel and is realized by long-life LEDs. A DIP switch enables individual switching of head and tail lights. With the NEM651 interface, the model is prepared for retrofitting with a digital decoder.
The model is designed for operation on 2-wire direct current systems (DC) and, thanks to its compact design, offers perfect integration on N-gauge layouts, even with tight radii from 192 mm.
The locomotive impresses with its prototypical design with double lamps and detailed roof and body elements. The exact printing and the precise reproduction of the grab irons and buffer beams underline the quality of this model. With a length over buffers (LüP) of 104 mm, the locomotive fits perfectly with most freight and passenger train sets of Era IV.
The locomotive is low-maintenance, but should be regularly cleaned of dust and dirt. The axles and moving parts can be lightly oiled if necessary to ensure optimum functionality. The LED lighting is long-lasting, but should be protected from moisture. Retrofitting with a digital decoder takes place via the NEM651 interface and is easy to carry out.
