DRG E88.2 with a fascinating real-life background

The ongoing electrification of the Westbahn created a need for powerful electric freight locomotives. The electrical components for the 22 locomotives were supplied by AEG. The mechanical components for the first 15 units were manufactured by the StEG Locomotive Factory, while the remaining 7 units were produced by the Floridsdorf Locomotive Factory.

The locomotives were used by the Deutsche Reichsbahn as the E88.2 class. In the early 1950s, they returned to Austria, where they continued to be used as the Class 1280. By 1976, all of the locomotives had finally been taken out of service. The E88 204 is therefore an interesting model for collectors and layout operators who wish to depict early electric traction with historical significance.
