The VT18.16 multiple units of the Deutsche Reichsbahn - later known as the BR 175 - embodied the international travel experience of the GDR on rails. Produced by VEB Waggonbau Görlitz from 1963, these high-quality multiple units were designed for cross-border use. They regularly traveled to countries such as Scandinavia, Austria and Czechoslovakia. They became famous for the Vindobona train run between Berlin, Prague and Vienna. The "Ernst Thälmann" model version shown here reflects this era of Era IV in impressive detail in N scale.
This model is made in N scale and designed for operation in a 2-conductor direct current system (DC). It has a direction-dependent light change (white/red) on an LED basis. The locomotive is not digitized and has no sound functions, but is ideal for classic analogue model railway layouts. The recommended minimum radius is 358 mm.
The BR 175 was a symbol of comfortable long-distance travel in the GDR. Due to the limited capacity of Scandinavian rail ferries, the trains were often operated with only two center cars for trips to the north. They saw their last major international service in the early 1980s under the names Karlex and Karola, e.g. to Karlsbad. They last ran to Vienna as Vindobona in 1979 - the end of an era due to economic factors.
With its four-part design and the historical reference to the "Ernst Thälmann" train, this model is a must for fans of the German Reichsbahn and the railroad history of the Eastern Bloc. Ideal for authentic replicas of international train services from the Cold War era.
The set includes a 4-car DR class 175 "Ernst Thälmann" multiple unit in N scale with light change.
