The legendary VT18.16 multiple units of the Deutsche Reichsbahn - later known as the BR 175 - were among the most prestigious vehicles of the GDR. Manufactured by VEB Waggonbau Görlitz from 1963, these elegant multiple units were primarily intended for international long-distance transportation. Among other destinations, they traveled to Scandinavia, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Their use on the international Vindobona train run via Prague to Vienna was particularly well known. The four-part model version "Ernst Thälmann" from Kato faithfully reproduces an important chapter of Era IV in N scale.
The multiple unit is designed for direct current operation (DC) and manufactured in H0 scale. It has digital control with an integrated sound function. A white/red light change automatically adapts to the direction of travel. The LED lighting ensures low-maintenance and energy-saving operation. The model can be used on a minimum radius of 358 mm and is therefore ideally suited for standard N layouts.
The class 175 was a real figurehead of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Due to the limited length of Scandinavian rail ferries, the vehicles were sometimes only used with two center cars. Their best-known use was the Vindobona, which ran as such to Vienna for the last time in 1979. After that, they continued to be used in international traffic, e.g. to Karlsbad, under names such as Karlex and Karola.
The "Ernst Thälmann" model combines historical significance and technical sophistication. The high-quality design in a four-part configuration makes it a gem on any N-gauge layout with a focus on the German Reichsbahn or international train connections in the GDR.
The set includes a 4-car DR class 175 "Ernst Thälmann" multiple unit in H0 scale with digital functions and sound equipment.
