In the prototype, water cranes with articulated booms were often found on platforms at exit tracks. The reason for such a location was obvious: If the steam locomotive of an arriving train had to add water, the locomotive did not always come to a halt exactly at a water crane. Pulling up or backing up again would have meant an increased danger for passengers getting on and off the train. The articulated boom provided a certain amount of length compensation in order to bring the nozzle up to the filler opening of the water tank in the locomotive end without the train having to start. This type of water crane was often part of a railroad depot's stock. An additional base with steps is included with the models to compensate for the difference in height between the tracks with ballast and the model tracks.
