The development of the two-axle VT 135 061 to 132 standard branch line railcars was carried out by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft in the mid-1930s. In 1937 and 1938, 64 units were delivered to the DRG. No further construction took place in favor of four-axle railcars and due to the outbreak of the Second World War. Despite considerable war losses, several railcars survived. After 1945, 32 units were transferred to the DB, now designated VT 70.9. Five vehicles were transferred to the CSD. Four operational VT 135s were designated M 140 301 - 304. The DR in the GDR received 10 units. They were used in Saxony, Mecklenburg and the Altmark. In 1970, 6 units were given the new road numbers 186 004 - 007, 258 and 259. The vehicles were taken out of service in the mid-1970s. The railcar 186 258-0 is preserved in the Halle P depot as a museum vehicle.
The model corresponds to the color scheme and lettering of the DR Era III VT 135 062. The VT 135 062 was based in the Dresden Pieschen depot of the Rbd Dresden from 1947 to 1965. From 1957 to 1964 it was used on the line from Bad Schandau to Sebnitz.
