Towards the end of the service life of the articulated trains, defective segments were removed from the train formation so that, among other things, 4-car trains were used. The Kres 1974D is a model of a 4-car double-decker articulated train of the type DGBq with a control compartment, which is modeled after the German State Railroad (DR) of Era IV.
Double-decker cars are trains that have two levels of passenger compartments or seats, which increases the passenger capacity without increasing the length of the train. The type DGBq indicates that it is a double-decker coach designed for use on local services.
The control compartment allows the driver to control the train from one end, providing flexibility when shunting and operating in both directions.
The DR (Deutsche Reichsbahn) was the state railroad company in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) until the reunification of Germany in 1990. Era IV refers to the period from around 1965 to 1990 in which the DR was active.
The model of the Kres 1974D therefore represents a specific type of double-decker articulated train that was operated by the DR in Era IV. It could be an attractive addition to model railroad layouts that want to recreate the operation of local trains from this era.
The model has emerald green bodies and fawn brown roofs. The control car is equipped with directional lighting. The version with a factory-installed KRES DCC light decoder (item no. 1974D) also has individually switchable cab lighting.
The prototype was in use in Thuringia until 1993.
