At the beginning of the 1950s, the DB fleet consisted primarily of two-, three- and four-axle Reichsbahn cars. Renewal and expansion were not yet feasible due to a lack of sufficient raw materials and capacity. For this reason, the fleet of around 20,000 cars was initially modernized with the funds available: the result was the so-called conversion cars. Starting in 1957, the 2nd class cars B4yg were put into service, the 1st and 2nd class cars followed a year later as AB4yg. The first cars still had swan-neck bogies, later the Minden-Deutz type was used. The last 4yg were not taken out of service until the 1990s. By the way, the "e" indicates the version with electric heating.
