At the beginning of the 1950s, the still young Deutsche Bundesbahn mainly had obsolete G 10 and G 02 flat-roofed freight wagons, which had long been due for refurbishment. A complete overhaul did not seem economically viable, and the budget was not sufficient for the construction and purchase of new wagons. It was therefore decided to convert and modernize the old wagons: among other things, the underframe, springs and buffer length were brought up to UIC standard, the superstructure was also built according to UIC guidelines with - compared to the G 10/G 02 - larger doors and ventilation openings. From the mid-1950s, around 14,000 Gms 54s were put into service.
From 1964, the coaches ran under the designation Gls 205. The PVC roof cladding fitted to the wooden cladding during conversion was gradually replaced by a steel roof in the 1970s.
