LGB 31202 Amtrak express train car Business P, Ep. VI Product Details

Description

Soon after Amtrak was founded in 1971, it became apparent that there were no modern passenger coaches available - most of them were from the 1950s and 1960s. New intercity coaches were therefore ordered from Budd, which were basically based on the Penn Central Metroliner multiple units, but were not powered and were instead pulled by locomotives. Between 1975 and 1977, a total of 492 of these 26-metre-long and approximately 50-tonne vehicles were built, which - depending on the version - have up to 84 seats in open-plan areas. Although the maximum speed is 200 m/h, it can only be used on a few routes - mainly on the 750 km long north-east corridor from Washington via Philadelphia and New York to Boston. There are various types such as business class, normal seating cars, dining cars and club cars. Even sleeping cars were experimented with, but this was not pursued further. Following the success of these carriages, a further 150 were delivered, known internally as "Amfleet II". These differ from their predecessors in that they only have access doors at one end of the carriage and slightly larger windows. These carriages are still in use today - albeit having been converted and modernized several times - mainly on shorter routes in the east and mid-west of the USA. The long intercontinental express trains are firmly in the hands of the double-decker Superliners.
