The Liliput L265245 N Heavy-Duty Freight Car SSy 55 "USATC" is a highly detailed replica of a historic bogie flat car, originally developed by the United States Army Transportation Corps (USATC) and later adopted by the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB). With its weathered Kessel cargo, the included crossing plates, and high-quality craftsmanship, this heavy-duty flatcar is an excellent addition to Era III model railroads.
After World War II, numerous U.S. military transport cars remained in Europe and continued to be used by various European railroads. One of these cars was the SSy 55 model, which was originally developed for transporting tanks, heavy machinery, and other bulky loads.
The cars were later retired by the German Federal Railroad (DB) and used for civilian heavy-haul transport. Their robust plank floor without stanchions allowed for flexible loading, while the Minden-Dorstfeld DB 931 bogies ensured high load-bearing capacity and excellent running characteristics. The variant shown here, with the road number 554 689, was in service in 1958 and was used to transport large components such as boilers and machine parts.
Era III (1945–1970) was marked by the reconstruction of European railways and the modernization of the rail network.
