Design & workmanship

Historical background

The class 86 was developed by the DRG from 1928 for mixed service. After the Second World War, over 160 locomotives remained in the GDR, where they were used on main and branch lines. In Saxony, they took over the express train service between Berlin and Zittau and replaced older tender locomotives. The variant shown here dates from 1973 - a high point of their service in the GDR.
