The Märklin 38327 H0 Steam Locomotive 18 323, DB, Era III, AC MFX Sound is an impressive model of a locomotive that has a special place in the history of the German Federal Railroad. Until the late sixties, the 18 323 was considered a real icon on DB tracks and is described in the available information as "the most beautiful of the beautiful". As a powerful express steam locomotive, it has exactly the kind of charisma that can make a model the centerpiece of a collection or layout.
The prototype was used throughout the Federal Republic of Germany under the direction of the Bundesbahn-Zentralamt until 1969. This locomotive therefore fits particularly well into layouts and collections that represent the important DB Era III. Its appearance between the diesel and electric locomotives of the time and the widely used standard steam locomotives already caused a sensation with the large prototype.
The prototype for the Märklin 38327 is the German Federal Railroad express train steam locomotive 18 323 with a 2'2 T29.6 coal tender. It is a former Baden IVh that was used as a test locomotive at the Federal Railroad Test Office in Minden.
The locomotive has a black/red basic paint scheme. The design includes Witte wind deflectors and Indusi on the driver's side. Another characteristic feature is the chimney with Caledonian brim. The depicted operating condition is set to around 1966.
The model is equipped with an mfx digital decoder and has extensive sound functions. The controlled high-performance drive has a flywheel mass in the boiler. A total of 3 axles are powered and the model also has traction tires.
The locomotive and tender are largely made of metal. This gives the model a high-quality and present effect. The locomotive is also appropriately aged, which further enhances the impression of an express steam locomotive in service.
A special feature of the Märklin 38327 is the smoke insert installed as standard. This has a speed-dependent, dynamic smoke output and can be controlled digitally. This makes the operation of the express steam locomotive particularly lively.
The triple headlights that change over with the direction of travel are in conventional operation and can be controlled digitally. In addition, the cab lighting, running gear lighting and firebox flickering can be controlled separately in digital operation. Maintenance-free warm white and red LEDs are used for the lighting.
There is an adjustable close coupler with kinematics between the locomotive and tender. There is a kinematic close coupler with an NEM shaft on the tender. The buffer height on the locomotive and tender is NEM. The minimum passable radius is 360 mm.
For large radii or presentation in the display case, closer-fitting access steps underneath the driver's cab are included for replacement. Piston rod protection tubes as well as heating and brake hoses are also included. The length over buffers is 27.2 cm.
You will find passenger cars to go with the 18 323 steam locomotive in the Märklin H0 assortment under item numbers 42500 to 42540 to match the express train character of the locomotive.
If you are looking for a distinctive Era III DB express train steam locomotive with mfx sound, dynamic smoke exhaust, a metal design, and aging appropriate for operation, the Märklin 38327 H0 Steam Locomotive 18 323 is an excellent choice. Get this special locomotive and add a real queen of model railroading to your H0 layout.
