The steam locomotive 18 314 - known by the nickname "Schorsch" - embodies one of the most fascinating life stories in locomotive construction on the German State Railroad of the GDR. Originally commissioned in 1919 as a Baden class IV h express locomotive, it was transferred to the Soviet occupation zone after the Second World War in exchange for an S 3/6. There it found a new purpose as an experimental locomotive at VES-M Halle. The extensive conversion work in the 1960s turned it into a unique technological specimen - including a new boiler, new driver's cab design, partial panelling and finally an oil main firing system from 1967. With its green paintwork, it was not only technically unique, but also visually unique.
The Märklin 39029 model faithfully reproduces the locomotive as it was around 1968. The high-quality construction made mostly of metal and many applied details make it a highlight for collectors and technology enthusiasts. Its history reflects a chapter of GDR technology history that is impressively honored with this model.
With a controlled high-performance drive and flywheel mass in the boiler, the model ensures powerful and realistic driving characteristics. Three axles are powered, supported by traction tires. The locomotive has an mfx+ digital decoder with extensive operating and sound functions. The dynamic smoke insert, which is fitted as standard and is speed-dependent, has a particularly realistic effect.
The lighting is provided by maintenance-free LEDs in warm white and red. Driver's cab and running gear lighting as well as two red front lamps can be switched separately digitally. An integrated buffer memory ensures reliable operation even during short power interruptions. A close coupler with kinematics is used to couple the locomotive to the tender; there is also an NEM shaft on the tender.
The model is designed for a minimum radius of 360 mm. For larger radii or a stylish presentation in the display case, an additional cladding without wheel cut-out is included. Piston rod protection tubes and brake hoses are included for individual refinement. This makes the Märklin 39029 suitable for demanding operation as well as for high-quality display case presentation.
The Märklin 39029 is an ideal model for experienced model railroaders and historically interested collectors. Its technical equipment, the striking design and the unusual prototype history make it a real collector's item. If you want to integrate an authentic piece of GDR railroad history into your H0 layout or present it in your display case, this model is the right choice.
