The Märklin 55086 class 13 (241 A) steam locomotive is a majestic tribute to the golden age of travel. Starting in the 1930s, the powerful class 241 A express locomotives of the French Eastern Railroad (EST) hauled heavy luxury trains such as the Arlberg-Orient Express between Paris, Cherbourg, Le Havre, and Basel. The model presented here with the road number EST 241-004 shows the condition around 1931 - in the typical black of the pre-war period with a matching express train use as an "EDELWEISS" locomotive.

Technical details & digital equipment

The locomotive is made entirely of metal: The running gear, boiler, driver's cab and tender are made of die-cast zinc, supplemented by numerous brass add-on parts. The built-in mfx digital decoder is equipped with 32 functions and supports alternating current, direct current, Märklin Digital and DCC. An integrated buffer capacitor ensures uninterrupted operation.

The controlled high-performance drive powers all the driving axles. A smoke generator produces wheel-synchronized steam output including multi-stage cylinder steam and steam whistle. The lighting functions are also impressive: warm white LEDs with two-light headlights, switchable red tail light and firebox and cab lighting with a flickering effect.

Design & true to the prototype

The locomotive has many movable details: cab doors, dome cover, sand cover and smokebox door can be opened. The controls can be switched in three stages (forward, reverse, continuous operation) and are moved by a servo motor. A screw coupling is fitted at the front and a remote-controlled Telex coupling is fitted at the rear (can be replaced with a screw coupling).

The locomotive is supplied on a black painted aluminum base for showcase presentation. The accessories include an additional screw coupling, steam oil, engine driver and stoker figure as well as gloves. The minimum passable radius is 1,020 mm.
