The Märklin 55604 brings one of the vehicles with the strongest character in German railroad history back to the rails: the class 160 electric switch engine, affectionately known as the "iron". With its purple-red paintwork, striking silhouette and massive superstructure, this locomotive represents the operating atmosphere of the 1970s in southern German railroad stations like no other. The model shown here bears the road number 160 002-2 and shows the condition around 1971.
The revised model is made entirely of metal - both the chassis with main frame and the locomotive body. It impresses with its high level of detail and solid construction. Numerous attached parts such as grab irons, signs, windshield wipers, bell, whistle and brake lines emphasize the quality of the craftsmanship. The buffer planks are fitted with spring-loaded buffers and increase operational safety.
Inside, a centrally installed high-performance motor provides drive to all axles - perfect power transmission for prototypical shunting. The mfx digital decoder offers 31 individually controllable functions, including extensive sound effects, light functions and coupler control. The locomotive is compatible with Märklin Digital, DCC, DC and AC operation.
One highlight is the SBS 10 pantograph with DBS 54 collector shoe that can be raised and lowered by motor and can be controlled in digital operation. The white three-light headlights alternate with a red marker light depending on the direction of travel. Warm white cab lighting can also be controlled digitally.
The driver's cab doors can be opened and provide a view of the elaborately reproduced interior, including a train driver figure. The locomotive is equipped as standard with Telex couplers at the front and rear that can be controlled remotely by digital control. Two interchangeable screw couplings are also included.
A parameterizable power storage unit ensures safe operation even with brief interruptions in the power supply. With a total weight of approx. 3.6 kg and a length over buffers of 35 cm, the locomotive has the necessary mass for prototypical driving behavior. The minimum radius for use is 1,020 mm.
The Märklin class 160 is a must for gauge 1 enthusiasts who are looking for a powerful, historic and technically advanced locomotive for their layout or collection. The "iron" is one of the most famous locomotive legends of the DB - and in this form a true masterpiece in 1:32 scale.
