The Laae 540 double units were used by DB for large-scale car transport—primarily from manufacturing plants to distribution centers. Two cars form a permanently coupled unit with continuous loading areas and drive-through capabilities. They were loaded with all types of passenger cars, from mid-size sedans to station wagons.
