Description

210106002 SPW-60 PB armored reconnaissance vehicle, new turret with machine gun, NVA - GDR military history in miniature

The H0 SPW-60 PB armored reconnaissance vehicle with new turret and machine gun is a faithful replica of one of the most important armored personnel carriers of the National People's Army (NVA). Based on the Soviet BTR-60, this armored vehicle was delivered in large numbers to the GDR, where it was known as the SPW-60. With its modern rotating turret and heavy armament, this tank was a central element of the motorized rifle troops of the NVA.

The prototype: The BTR-60 - a versatile troop carrier

The BTR-60 was developed in the Soviet Union in the late 1950s and built in series from 1960. This model was the first in a series of 4-axle armored personnel carriers designed for the Soviet land forces and the armies of the Warsaw Pact. The BTR-60 was built by the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) and the Kurgan Wheel Tractor Plant (KZKT), among others. The vehicle was presented to the public for the first time in 1961 during a military parade.

The vehicle, which weighed around 9.5 tons, was equipped with two 6-cylinder petrol engines, which together developed an output of 160 hp. The special drive structure ensured that the right-hand engine drove the first and third pair of wheels, while the left-hand engine drove the second and fourth pair of wheels. This enabled flexible steering and high off-road mobility. The maximum speed on the road was up to 80 km/h. For amphibious operations, a water jet drive was installed at the rear, which enabled speeds of up to 10 km/h in water.

The SPW-60 in the NVA

The National People's Army of the GDR received around 500 BTR-60s, which were operated under the designation SPW-60. These vehicles replaced the older SPW-152 and became one of the most important vehicle types of the NVA's motorized rifle troops. The first models delivered, known as SPW-60PA, were used from 1963 to 1966 and still had an open roof. From 1967, the closed version SPW-60PB was introduced, which had a rotating turret with a 14.5 mm machine gun and a 7.62 mm tank machine gun.

The closed design made the vehicle safer, but it also led to space problems inside. While earlier models offered space for up to 16 people, the SPW-60PB could only carry eight soldiers. Access was via roof hatches and two smaller hatches on the sides. Despite the high off-road capability, the vehicle was highly susceptible to tire damage in difficult terrain.

Technical details of the model

The H0 SPW-40 P2 armored reconnaissance vehicle was reproduced true to scale on a scale of 1:87. The striking turret with machine gun reflects the typical armament of the SPW-60PB variant. The exact printing and detailed reproduction of the armor make this model an impressive collector's item.

Color scheme and design

The model shows the classic camouflage color of the NVA and has all the typical markings. The printing has been implemented with the utmost precision to ensure the most authentic representation of the original. The fine details in particular, such as the textured tires, the tank hatches and the machine gun armament, give this model an extremely realistic appearance.

High-quality workmanship and realistic details

This model impresses with its excellent workmanship and extremely detailed reproduction of all relevant elements of the original. The new turret is fully rotatable, while the machine gun has been mounted in a realistic position. The faithfully reproduced undercarriage details and the fine engravings on the armor plates underline the high quality of the model.

Why the SPW-60 PB with new turret is a highlight for collectors

This model is a valuable addition for collectors of GDR and Warsaw Pact vehicles. The SPW-60PB was one of the most important vehicles of the NVA and was used in different variants for many years. Thanks to its realistic representation and true-to-original color scheme, this model is ideal for historical dioramas or as a collector's item for military model enthusiasts.

Conclusion: An authentic military vehicle for H0 layouts

With the SPW-60 PB armored reconnaissance vehicle, you can bring a piece of GDR military history to your model railway layout. Whether as a collector's item or as a realistic addition to a historical scene - this model impresses with its attention to detail and high-quality workmanship.
