Era IV (1970-1990) was a phase of technical development and rationalization in railroad operations. The Deutsche Reichsbahn modernized numerous vehicles and increasingly relied on steam locomotives in need of reconstruction in order to extend their service life. The VI K Reko with the road number 99 1715-4 is an example of this approach: It was optimized with welded water boxes and technical modifications in order to meet the high requirements of narrow-gauge operation in the GDR.
