The Piko 21784 H0 E17 123 electric locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn combines a distinctive Era III prototype with extensive digital sound features for the 3L AC system. The E17 123 was one of only two locomotives of this class that were acquired by the Deutsche Reichsbahn after World War II. After its return from the Soviet Union, it was put back into service in 1957 and subsequently operated on the electrified network in central Germany pulling passenger trains until 1968. Piko has recreated this special locomotive as an H0 model featuring PIKO TrainSound, digital capabilities, and numerous specific details.
The prototype for the Piko 21784 is the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s E17 123. Its history after World War II makes this locomotive particularly interesting within the series. Only two locomotives of this series were transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The E17 123 returned from the Soviet Union and was put back into service in 1957.
The locomotive remained in service on the electrified network in central Germany until 1968, where it was used to haul passenger trains. Consequently, the model has a clear chronological and operational classification within Era III and can be appropriately assigned to the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s rolling stock.
The Piko 21784 incorporates several characteristic details of the depicted E17 123. These include the original DRG lamp design, which defines the locomotive’s appearance. This design is complemented by delicate roof walkways.
The model also features additional specific characteristics in the roof area, notably grooved insulators with a transverse axis (SBS 10). Together with the fine roof walkways, these elements form an important part of the detailed design.
Several components are produced separately. These include lubrication reservoirs, power outlets, handrails, and end plate holders. These details complement the special design of the E17 123 and contribute to the refined representation of the H0-scale model.
In addition, the locomotive features SIFA cables and DR-style windshield wipers. These elements capture further characteristics of the depicted variant and are specifically tailored to the Deutsche Reichsbahn design of Era III.
The Piko 21784 is designed as an AC sound version. The model operates on the 3L AC system and is already digitally equipped. Additionally, the locomotive features sound with PIKO TrainSound.
PluX22 is specified as the interface. This allows the model to combine the historical design of the E17 123 with modern digital technology for AC operation. Digital operation and sound are among the key technical features of this variant.
The features include digitally controllable cab lighting and digitally controllable engine room lighting. This allows for targeted illumination of additional areas of the locomotive.
The standard lighting uses LED bulbs. A red-to-white light change is also included. The combination of LED lighting, additional digitally controllable lighting functions, and PIKO TrainSound enhances the model’s technical features.
The length over buffers is 183 mm. The minimum curve radius is specified as 358 mm. These technical specifications can be taken into account when planning the locomotive’s use on an existing H0 layout.
Regarding the coupler system, the Piko 21784 features a NEM-compliant coupler box with KK kinematics. This clearly defines the coupler type, which can be taken into account when assembling corresponding passenger trains.
The Piko 21784 combines the unique history of the E17 123 with detailed construction and digital sound technology for the 3L AC system. Original DRG lamp design, fine roof walkways, separate lubrication reservoirs, power outlets, handrails, and end-disc holders are among the specified features, as are grooved insulators with SBS 10 transverse axis, SIFA cables, and DR-style windshield wipers.
With PIKO TrainSound, a PluX22 interface, digitally controllable cab and engine room lighting, and red-and-white LED headlight switching, the Piko 21784 offers a comprehensive set of features. The E17 123 thus adds a special AC-sound electric locomotive to the H0 fleet of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era III.
