With the Piko 22080, PIKO brings a powerful piece of Scandinavian railroad history to the H0 tracks: the BR MZ diesel locomotive of the Danish State Railways (DSB) in the Era IV version. The legendary class stands for performance, longevity and international locomotive tradition - ideal for fans of Northern Europe and diesel enthusiasts.

Between 1967 and 1978, a total of 61 MZ series locomotives were built in four series by the Swedish company NOHAB (under license from General Motors EMD). Their striking design, powerful technology and versatility in express train and freight service made them the backbone of Danish diesel traction for decades. The model shown here embodies Era IV - a time when DSB-MZ locomotives dominated the scene on main lines.

Digitally prepared & sound-capable

The locomotive has a PluX22 interface in accordance with NEM 658 and is therefore prepared for retrofitting a digital or sound decoder. The PIKO sound decoder #56659 is recommended for an authentic sound image, with which the typical EMD sounds can be reproduced true to the original.

Lighting & digital functions

The model is equipped with a white/red light change depending on the direction of travel as well as digitally switchable driver's cab lighting. The illuminated driver's desk ensures a harmonious appearance - perfect for use in the depot or night operation.

Detailing & model quality

The PIKO model shines with numerous fine details: front sockets, steam heating hoses, attached tank nozzles and fine spring assemblies convey a realistic image of the NOHAB design. Handles and steps are just as delicately realized as the neatly engraved body parts. Brake hoses and coupling hooks are included for optional installation.

Technical data & compatibility

With a length over buffers of 241 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, the locomotive is suitable for generously designed H0 layouts. Two traction tires ensure high tractive power. The locomotive is equipped with an NEM shaft and close coupler link and can therefore be safely integrated into any train formation.

Prototype & field of application

The DSB MZ was used in express train service between Copenhagen and Jutland as well as in heavy freight service. Even after it was taken out of service, it remained in use worldwide - proof of its robustness. Today, its legacy lives on in museums and on private railroads. The model is an ideal addition to Scandinavian, international or diesel H0 layouts.
