The Piko 24567 H0 G02 Covered Freight Car of the Deutsche Reichsbahn is based on a special prototype from 1950. Under the slogan “Blue Flags to Berlin,” hundreds of thousands of young people traveled to East Berlin for the FDJ’s first Germany-wide gathering during Pentecost 1950. Since there were not enough passenger cars available for this event, the DR used freight cars that had been provisionally converted. The Piko model commemorates this specific use with its authentic special lettering: “(-DR) USSR Zone.”
The prototype for the Piko 24567 is a G02 covered freight car of the Deutsche Reichsbahn from Era III. The design is based on the FDJ Germany Rally in 1950 and thus represents a special variant within the freight car fleet.
During the Germany Meeting, DR freight cars that had been provisionally converted were used due to a shortage of passenger cars. In this model variant, the G02 covered freight car represents precisely this unusual use and thus differs significantly from a standard freight car design.
A key feature of the Piko 24567 is the authentic special lettering “(-DR) USSR Zone.” It characterizes this model’s special design and establishes a direct connection to the prototype it represents.
In conjunction with the version commemorating the 1950 FDJ Germany Rally, the car gains a clearly defined historical context. The special lettering makes the model particularly interesting for a collection focused on Deutsche Reichsbahn rolling stock from Era III that also includes unusual car variants.
The covered freight car is classified as belonging to the German Reichsbahn and Era III. This allows the Piko 24567 to be clearly classified within a corresponding H0 fleet. The combination of the G02 type, the DR version, and the reference to the 1950 Germany Meet forms the defining focus of this model.
It is precisely the unique use of a freight car for passenger transport during the gathering that sets this version apart from ordinary freight cars. The Piko 24567 specifically captures this extraordinary operating condition.
The model is designed for H0 gauge and is built to a 1:87 scale. The length over buffers is 109 mm. This gives the covered freight car clearly defined dimensions for use on an H0 layout.
The minimum curve radius is specified as 358 mm. This technical specification can be taken into account when planning the car’s operation and designing the track layout.
Regarding the coupling system, the Piko 24567 features a NEM-compliant coupling box with KK kinematics. This clearly defines the model’s coupling configuration.
The power system is specified as 2L direct current (DC). The car is not digitally equipped and has no sound. The focus is therefore on the special design of the G02 and the custom lettering based on the historic prototype.
The Piko 24567 combines a covered G02 freight car of the Deutsche Reichsbahn with a special connection to the FDJ’s Germany-wide gathering in 1950. The authentic lettering “(-DR) USSR Zone” and its design as a temporarily deployed freight car make the model an exceptional variant of Era III.
As such, the Piko 24567 adds a model with a clearly defined historical background to an H0 fleet. The combination of the DR version, G02 type, and special lettering makes this covered freight car an interesting addition to appropriately themed collections and layouts.
