Beginning in the mid-1950s, passenger car series known as conversion cars were created at the Deutsche Bundesbahn by converting Länderbahn compartment cars. Second class cars, first and second class cars, and second class cars with baggage compartments were realized.
For many years, they were indispensable in local traffic on main and branch lines. It was not until the mid-1980s that the last of them were taken out of service, but they are still in service today on museum railroads or as construction train cars.
In the prototype, the electrical equipment of the 3yg(e) cars only allowed them to form a short-coupled pair with each other, although here one was free in the choice of cars, so that all possible combinations exceptBD3yg + BD3yg were possible.
