Description

As AC electrification progressed, the need for suitable locomotives grew at ČSD. As a further development of the BR S499.0, the robust S499.02 locomotives were created in the mid-1970s. For cost reasons, the locomotive body of the new S499.02 was no longer made of glass fiber reinforced plastic, but of steel, which is why the locomotives differed significantly from the S499.0 on the outside. Between 1975 and 1981, 86 units were put into service at ČSD and were used in front of both freight and passenger trains. In the 1980s, some of the locomotives received modern single-arm pantographs and in 1988 they were redesignated as class 242. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, all BR S499.02s went to the Czech railroads (ČD) and are still in service there today.
