The class 03 was developed between 1930 and 1938 especially for lines on which a maximum axle load of 18 tons was prescribed. A total of 298 of these express locomotives were built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The design was a lighter version of the 01 series and was characterized by a smaller boiler, reduced cylinders and a lighter ingot frame. This led to a reduced axle load and made the locomotive ideal for lines with lower loads.
During its service life, the BR 03 was continuously developed further. The first units were designed for a top speed of 120 km/h, while later units reached 130 km/h ex works. In 1959, the Deutsche Bundesbahn was still operating 145 of these impressive steam locomotives, which were now known as the 003 series. By 1972, the last locomotives had been retired, but their iconic design and impressive performance left a lasting impression.
Era IV (1965-1990) was a time of transition for the Deutsche Bundesbahn. This era was characterized by modernization, the use of new types of locomotives and the gradual withdrawal of steam locomotives.
