DR Ep. III B4p 2nd class compartment car, without brakeman's cabIn 1899, the Saxon State Railroad began building pure 2nd class cars that were intended for passenger and express train service. As with the previous cars, the arrangement and number of compartments and lavatories determined the car body length. The cars had a total of eight upholstered class compartments and three lavatories between each seat compartment. Lighting was provided by gas tanks mounted under the cars.
The bogie was of the standard Prussian design with pressed side cheeks. Heating was provided by steam from the locomotives. Some cars were fitted with high brakeman's cabs. After World War II, the cars remained in various parts of Europe and were even used sporadically into the 1970s.
