The ET22 class is one of the most impressive and powerful electric locomotives in the fleet of the Polish State Railways (PKP). A total of 1,183 units were built between 1969 and 1990, making the ET22 not only the most frequently built electric locomotive in Poland, but in the whole of Europe. With its striking appearance and universal range of applications, it shaped the image of electric rail transport in Poland for decades.
The six-axle Co'Co' locomotives with an hourly output of 3,120 kW and a maximum speed of 125 km/h were designed for both heavy freight and passenger trains. They could easily haul freight trains weighing over 3,000 tons at 70 km/h or run busy passenger trains of up to 700 tons at top speed. The robust construction, coupled with a timelessly elegant design, helped the ET22 to achieve great popularity and a permanent place on almost all electrified lines of the PKP network.
The PIKO 96345 faithfully reproduces the ET22 in the current PKP-Cargo design of Era VI. The model has two finely executed metal scissor pantographs, an elaborately designed roof garden and precisely implemented lamp areas. The cab and engine room lighting can be controlled digitally after installing a PluX22 decoder. The solid construction is based on a die-cast zinc frame, which provides additional mass and tractive force.
With a length over buffers of 221 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, the model is suitable for use on all standard H0 DC layouts. Two traction tires support traction, especially in freight traffic. The locomotive is equipped with a NEM 658 PluX22 interface and is prepared for retrofitting a PIKO sound decoder (item no. 56569). The headlights change in white/red depending on the direction of travel.
The PIKO 96345 is the ideal choice for model railroaders aged 14 and over who are looking for a powerful, prototypical and flexible electric locomotive. It fits perfectly into modern Era VI freight train formations and impresses both visually and technically with a high level of detailing and operational reliability.
