The ET41 is one of the most striking freight locomotives in the Polish State Railways (PKP) fleet. Between 1977 and 1980, a total of 200 of these powerful double locomotives were built by the Cegielski factory in Poznań. The design was based on the tried-and-tested one-piece EU07, but was built in a double version for heavy freight service. The driver's cabs on the inside of the two permanently connected locomotive halves were omitted in favor of additional ballast, which significantly increased the friction mass and thus the tractive power.
The ET41 is still in use today, particularly in southern Poland, and shows its strengths especially in mountain service. For this purpose, the chassis was reinforced and the frame simplified in order to withstand the tough operating conditions. The four scissor pantographs allow reliable overhead line operation and emphasize the typical character of this strongly shaped double locomotive in the PKP-Cargo design of Era VI.
The PIKO model 96396 impressively realizes the ET41 as a form variant. The factory-installed PluX22 sound decoder offers a variety of sounds true to the original and adds an acoustically realistic component to the high-quality driving experience. The cab lighting can be switched digitally, as can the white/red light change depending on the direction of travel. The locomotive is also prepared for real overhead line operation, which opens up additional operating options on appropriately equipped layouts.
With a length over buffers of 183 mm, the model is suitable for many layout sizes. The high tractive force is additionally supported by two traction tires. Thanks to the NEM shaft and close coupler link, the locomotive can be easily added to freight trains. The minimum radius of 358 mm enables reliable use even on narrower routes.
The PIKO 96396 is a must for all model railroaders aged 14 and over who want to authentically depict Polish freight train traffic. With its impressive design, digital technology, finely detailed pantographs and high tractive power, the ET41 is a real highlight on any H0 DC layout, both visually and technically.
