Description

PIKO 96892 H0 Electric locomotive Re 4/4 I 409, SBB, Ep. III

The class Re 4/4 I electric locomotives were among the defining vehicles of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in the post-war period. The first machines with the numbers 401 to 426 were delivered in the classic fir green livery. However, from the mid-1950s, two locomotives caused a sensation: As part of a paint testing program, they were given much more striking liveries. The Re 4/4 I 409 was a particular eye-catcher - it was used between 1955 and 1959 in a sapphire blue livery and thus visibly deviated from the typical appearance of the Swiss railroads.

A rare splash of color in everyday railroad life

At a time when trains in Switzerland were predominantly painted green or brown, the sapphire blue Re 4/4 I 409 was considered a real exception. At the same time, locomotive 416 was painted lime green - based on the well-known color scheme of the Ae 8/14. These two vehicles not only attracted the interest of railroad fans, but also the attention of many travelers. With the 96892, PIKO has faithfully reproduced this special prototype in the model.

True to the original design with fine details

The PIKO 96892 shows the Re 4/4 I in the design of the 1950s with typical horizontal blinds on the sides. The finely crafted roof garden, free-standing windshield wipers and two filigree metal scissor pantographs emphasize the high-quality design of the model. The locomotive has a digital interface in accordance with NEM 658 (PluX22) and can be retrofitted with a PIKO #56585 sound decoder if required.

Digital light functions with optional decoder

Driver's cab and engine room lighting can be switched digitally if a corresponding decoder is installed. The light changes in white/white depending on the direction of travel and thus corresponds to the Era III representation. The combination of visual authenticity and technical expandability makes this model particularly interesting for model railroaders who value attention to detail.

Technically reliable for direct current operation

The locomotive is designed for operation on H0 DC layouts and is suitable for a wide variety of layout types thanks to a length over buffers of 169 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm. Two traction tires ensure stable traction. Thanks to the close coupler link with NEM shaft, the locomotive can be easily integrated into train formations. The PIKO 96892 is aimed at model railroaders aged 14 and over who want to display an extraordinary piece of Swiss railroad history in their collection or on their layout.
