The class S499.02 electric locomotives were designed in the mid-1970s as a further development of the successful class S499.0. The most striking feature was the wide fan belt for cooling the transformer, which was used instead of the usual side windows. Apart from this, the locomotive body largely corresponded to that of the DC locomotives of type E 469.3. The construction was designed for continuous operation and was used in a wide variety of services.
Between 1975 and 1981, a total of 86 locomotives of this type were put into service by the former ČSD. The locomotives provided reliable service for both passenger and freight trains. In the 1980s, some locomotives were equipped with modern single-arm pantographs. In 1988, the locomotives were finally redesignated as class 242. Today, many vehicles of this class are used by CD-Cargo and are an integral part of freight transport in the Czech Republic.
The PIKO 97413 is a high-quality H0 model of the class 242 in the CD-Cargo version for Era VI. It is designed for direct current operation and has a NEM 658 PluX22 digital interface. Driver's cab, engine room and running gear lighting can be switched separately digitally after installing a suitable decoder. This allows different operational situations to be realistically represented on the model railroad layout.
Two finely crafted single-arm pantographs made of metal are just as much a part of the equipment as detailed fittings in the driver's cabs and engine room. The perfectly framed front windows underline the high-quality overall visual impression. The model has a close coupler link with NEM shaft and is suitable for a minimum radius of 358 mm. A sound decoder (PIKO item no. 56622) can be retrofitted as an option.
With a length over buffers of 189 mm, the locomotive is versatile and can be used on both large and compact layouts. The direction of travel-dependent light change in white and red ensures a realistic operating image. The PIKO 97413 is ideal for model railroaders who are looking for an accurately reproduced, digitally expandable model of the 242 series and value functionality and faithfulness to the prototype.
