The class S499.02 developed in the mid-1970s was a direct further development of the proven class S499.0. Visually, it differed in particular by a wide fan belt on the sides, which served to cool the transformer instead of the previously common windows. Apart from this, the locomotive body essentially corresponded to that of the type E 469.3 direct current locomotives. The robust construction and the well thought-out concept predestined the locomotives for versatile use in everyday railroad operations.
Between 1975 and 1981, a total of 86 locomotives of this type were put into service with the former ČSD. They were used both in front of freight trains and in passenger transport and proved their worth over the decades. In the 1980s, some machines received modernized single-arm pantographs, bringing them up to the current state of the art. In 1988, they were officially re-designated as class 242. Today, many of these locomotives are used by CD-Cargo, among others - including the prototype of the Era VI locomotive 242 shown here.
The PIKO 97414 is equipped with a factory-fitted PluX22 sound decoder, which provides a detailed soundscape via the PIKO TrainSound® system. In addition to authentic driving and additional sounds, the model has digitally switchable lighting functions, including cab, engine room and running gear lighting. This allows the model to be presented realistically in a wide variety of operating situations.
Two single-arm pantographs made of metal form the roof detail of this model variant. The perfectly framed front windows and the detailed fittings in the driver's cabs and engine room ensure a realistic appearance. The locomotive is equipped with a digital interface according to NEM 658 (PluX22), has a close coupler link with NEM shaft and is designed for a minimum radius of 358 mm.
With a length over buffers of 189 mm, the PIKO 97414 is ideal for use on modern H0 DC layouts. The direction of travel-dependent light change in white and red completes the operational overall picture. The model is aimed at discerning model railroaders aged 14 and over who attach great importance to prototypical features, functionality and digital options.
