In the mid-1970s, robust electric locomotives were created with the S499.02 as a consistent further development of the successful BR S499.0. The new series was characterized in particular by a modified ventilation concept: Instead of the large side windows, the machines had a wide fan belt for effective cooling of the transformer. Apart from this change, the locomotive body largely corresponded to that of the type E 469.3 direct current locomotives.
Between 1975 and 1981, a total of 86 locomotives of this type were put into operation by the then ČSD. The locomotives were used in both freight and passenger train services and enjoyed great popularity due to their reliability. In the 1980s, some of these vehicles were equipped with modern single-arm pantographs. In 1988, they were finally redesignated as class 242, under which they are still in service today with various railroad companies - including private railroads such as RTI.
The PIKO 97416 model reproduces the 044 115 locomotive in a precise form variant for Era VI. It is designed for direct current operation and equipped with a NEM 658 PluX22 interface. Driver's cab, engine room and running gear lighting can be switched separately digitally after installing an appropriate decoder. These digital options enable an individually coordinated operating display on modern model railway layouts.
The locomotive has two finely crafted metal scissor pantographs that retain the classic appearance of the early version. The perfectly framed front windows, which give the model a realistic appearance, are particularly eye-catching. The interior is also impressive: the driver's cabs and engine room are reproduced in detail and ensure authenticity at a high level.
With a length over buffers of 189 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, the locomotive is ideal for use on typical H0 DC layouts. Coupling is via an NEM shaft with close coupler link, which ensures reliable operating conditions in daily use. If you also want to retrofit a PIKO sound decoder (item no. 56622), you can also upgrade the model acoustically. The PIKO 97416 is aimed at model railroaders aged 14 and over who appreciate technical expandability and prototypical design in equal measure.
