The locomotives of the S499.02 series were created in the mid-1970s as a further development of the successful BR S499.0. This new series was characterized by a robust appearance and improved technology. Particularly striking was the wide fan belt on the sides, which was fitted instead of the previously used large windows and served to cool the transformer. Apart from this detail, the locomotive body largely corresponded to that of the type E 469.3 direct current locomotives.
Between 1975 and 1981, a total of 86 of these locomotives were put into service with the former ČSD. They were used for both freight and passenger services and proved to be extremely reliable. In the 1980s, some of them were fitted with more modern single-arm pantographs, which were better suited to operational requirements. In 1988, the locomotives were finally re-designated as class 242, under which many vehicles are still in service today - some of them on private railroads such as RTI.
The PIKO 97417 offers an excellently equipped digital model of the electric locomotive 044 115. In addition to a factory-installed PluX22 sound decoder, which reproduces the typical operating sounds true to the original, numerous light functions can be switched digitally. These include the driver's cab lighting, the engine room lighting and the running gear lighting - each can be controlled separately using suitable digital control units.
The model has two single-arm pantographs made of metal, which reflect the modern condition of the prototype locomotive. The finely framed front windows are particularly striking and ensure a realistic appearance. The locomotive also offers numerous details on the inside: the driver's cabs and the engine room are elaborately reproduced and convey an authentic impression of the technical interior.
With a length over buffers of 189 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, the locomotive is ideally suited for operation on standard DC systems. The direction of travel-dependent light change in white and red, the factory-equipped sound function and the coupler with NEM shaft and close coupler set make the PIKO 97417 a versatile locomotive for Era VI. It is aimed at model railroaders aged 14 and over who expect a high level of detail and functionality.
