For the fast passenger service between Warsaw and Krakow, the Polish State Railroad (PKP) needed a modern locomotive series towards the end of the 1980s that could handle speeds of up to 160 km/h on a permanent basis. The existing EP05 locomotives, which had been converted from older EU05 locomotives from 1973 onwards, only met these requirements to a limited extent. They were outdated in terms of both numbers and technology, making a new development necessary.
In Breslau, Pafawag developed the new locomotive type 104E, which was put into operation by the PKP under the series designation EP09. The first locomotives proved extremely successful, with a total of 45 units being put into service by 1997. The EP09 subsequently replaced the EP05 almost completely and was soon to be found on numerous electrified main lines in passenger service. Its design was aimed at a combination of performance, reliability and speed.
The PIKO 97526 model is designed as a form variant of the EP09 and precisely reproduces the structural features of the prototype machine. The harmonious paintwork and detailed printing give the model an authentic overall impression. Two filigree metal scissor pantographs complete the roof equipment and underline the high-quality model construction. The cab and engine room lighting can be switched separately digitally after installing a digital decoder.
The PIKO 97526 is equipped with a NEM 658 PluX22 interface so that a suitable decoder can be easily retrofitted. The optional installation of the PIKO #56636 sound decoder is also possible. The direction of travel-dependent light change in white/red and the integrated driver's desk lighting contribute to the realistic operating impression. With its detailed design, the locomotive is ideal for Era V DC layouts.
The locomotive measures 193 mm over buffers and is designed for a minimum radius of 358 mm. Thanks to the NEM shaft and close coupler link, it can be easily integrated into existing train formations. The PIKO 97526 offers ambitious model railroaders a perfect basis for adding a characteristic locomotive of the Polish state railroad to their rolling stock - with the option of individual digital upgrades.
