At the end of the 1980s, the Polish State Railways (PKP) was looking for a powerful locomotive for high-quality passenger service. The aim was to be able to operate connections such as the one between Warsaw and Krakow at speeds of up to 160 km/h on a permanent basis. The existing EP05 series locomotives, which had been converted from older EU05 locomotives from 1973 onwards, were no longer able to meet these requirements. There were too few of them and they were already technically outdated.

The development of the EP09 by Pafawag

As a result, the Pafawag factory in Breslau designed a new locomotive type with the internal designation 104E, which went into operation as the EP09. The new locomotives fully met operational expectations. Between the first delivery and 1997, the PKP procured a total of 45 units of this series. Thanks to its performance, the EP09 was able to almost completely replace the older EP05 and quickly became the backbone of fast passenger transport on electrified lines in Poland.

Model realization with digitally prepared technology

The PIKO 97530 faithfully reproduces the EP09 015 in H0 scale. The model is aimed at DC railroaders and is equipped with a modern NEM 658 PluX22 digital interface. This makes it possible to retrofit a digital decoder on request in order to switch functions such as the cab and engine room lighting separately digitally. A sound decoder is not installed at the factory, but can be supplemented with the matching PIKO sound decoder #56636.

True to the original design and high-quality components

The model impresses with its harmonious paintwork and precise printing. Two finely detailed metal scissor pantographs underline the authentic overall impression. The driver's desk lighting is prepared and can be switched digitally with the appropriate decoder equipment. The direction of travel-dependent light change in white/red also ensures a realistic appearance on the layout.

Technology and design for operation on modern layouts

With a length over buffers of 193 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, the locomotive is suitable for use on many standard H0 DC layouts. The close coupler link with NEM shaft ensures reliable connections in the train set. The PIKO 97530 is ideal for model railroaders aged 14 and over who value faithfulness to the prototype, detailing and individual technical adaptations.
