In the course of the electrification of the Italian railroad network with direct current in the late 1920s, the need for powerful electric locomotives became more and more urgent. The Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) responded by developing new vehicle types, including the E.428 series - a direct further development of the tried and tested E.326. A total of 242 locomotives of this type were built between 1934 and 1943. They proved their worth as powerful universal locomotives and were a familiar sight on lines throughout the Italian peninsula for decades.
The E.428 is classically divided into three series. The first series comprised 122 locomotives, which were characterized by a central locomotive body with two clearly pronounced front ends. This design was typical of the early years of electric traction operation in Italy and gave the vehicles a massive, functional appearance. In contrast to the subsequent series, which were increasingly more aerodynamic in design, the first series still had a strongly technology-oriented design, which is particularly appreciated by model railroaders and railroad enthusiasts.
The PIKO 97806 faithfully reproduces the first series of the E.428 in H0 scale. The model is designed for direct current operation and has a modern digital interface in accordance with NEM 658 (PluX22). This makes it easy to retrofit a digital decoder in order to be able to switch a wide range of functions such as the driver's cab, interior and engine room lighting digitally. A sound decoder can also be installed as an option, for which PIKO offers the appropriate item #56623.
Two finely crafted metal scissor pantographs adorn the roof of the locomotive and emphasize the high level of detail of the model. The direction of travel-dependent light change in white/red ensures a realistic appearance in layout operation. The mechanics are also impressive: With two traction tires and a solid drive construction, the locomotive is reliable on the road. The coupler with close coupler link in accordance with the NEM standard allows reliable integration into existing vehicle formations. The recommended minimum radius of 358 mm ensures good compatibility with most H0 layouts.
This model is aimed at experienced H0 model railroaders aged 14 and over who place particular value on authentic design and high detailing. The PIKO 97806 is not only a convincing technical replica, but also a historically relevant vehicle from Era III that should not be missing on any Italian layout.
