The 111Aw cars, equipped with hot-air heating, are part of a later development of the well-known Polish “Y-car” family. Production began in the mid-1980s at HCP Poznań and Pafawag; many cars were later modernized by ZNTK workshops as part of major overhauls.

Distinctive features of the 111Aw model include the rectangular air intake grille on the aisle side, the heating and ventilation equipment located beneath the car floor, and the revised layout of the underfloor components. Unlike earlier versions, these cars do not have individual roof vents above each compartment.
