Together with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (GDR), the CSD procured a total of 35 multi-system locomotives for continuous electric operation on the Dresden-Prague line, which could be used both on the 3 kV direct current network of the ČSSR and on the 15 kV alternating current network of the GDR. After testing a prototype, fourteen series machines were put into operation from 1991 and stationed at the Děčín locomotive depot.

When the freight division CD Cargo was founded in 2007, nine locomotives were assigned to the new company. Thanks to the fact that until 2016 they were the only locomotives of ČD Cargo that could be used on the German railroad network, all locomotives were gradually modernized and painted in the new company colors.In addition to the main area of operation for the transport of trains at the border crossing Děčín/Bad Schandau (and on to Dresden and Leipzig), they are occasionally used in domestic traffic and also reach the border stations to Poland.
