With the timetable change in June 1991, the Austrian Federal Railways introduced the "New Austro-Takt 91", a revolutionary innovation in Austrian rail transport. The D 704 was an express train that served the Vienna Westbahnhof - Bischofshofen route via Amstetten, Selzthal and the Enns Valley. Its route did not take the usual route via Salzburg, but rather the scenic Gesäuse. Although this route was shorter, it did not offer a faster connection due to its lower standard of construction and greater number of stops. Instead, the train was used to connect tourist destinations in the Enns Valley and was particularly popular at weekends and during the vacations.

The model includes two 2nd class passenger cars (Bmpz) and one baggage car (Ds), which represent the typical cars of this express train.
