With the Roco 6200272 Car Set 1 of the EC 25 “Franz Liszt,” you can bring an important chapter of European long-distance rail travel to your model railroad. This four-car express train set from Deutsche Bahn AG features characteristic EuroCity cars from Era V in the 1996 “long-distance red/light gray” color scheme. The various car types and their features reflect the international passenger rail service between Cologne and Budapest. As a result, the set offers an interesting foundation for model railroad enthusiasts who are passionate about cross-border express trains and the development of European long-distance rail travel.
The EuroCity “Franz Liszt” represents a special phase in international rail travel. As early as 1988, the EC “Lehar”—the first EuroCity—ran across the former Iron Curtain between Vienna and Budapest. In May 1989, the EC “Franz Liszt” followed on this route, with its journey beginning in Cologne.
The route ran from Cologne via Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Linz, and Vienna to Budapest. In doing so, the train connected several major cities and rail networks. The Deutsche Bundesbahn—and later Deutsche Bahn—the Austrian Federal Railways, and the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) were all involved in its operation.
This international cooperation also shaped the train’s composition. In the years that followed, an increasing number of new, air-conditioned cars from the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) were put into service. Beginning in May 1999, Deutsche Bahn once again provided the rolling stock for the EC “Franz Liszt.”
The Roco 6200272 car set includes four different passenger cars that reflect the high-quality international long-distance service of Era V. The formation consists of one 1st-class compartment car, two combined 2nd-class compartment and open-plan cars, and one 2nd-class open-plan car.
The 1st-class car belongs to the Avmz 111.1 class. It is complemented by two combined compartment and open-plan cars of the Bvmz 185.3 and Bvmz 185.5 classes. These differ, among other things, in whether they are equipped for pressurization or not. The four-car set is rounded out by a second-class open-plan car of the Bpmz 291.3 class.
The various car types give the set a diverse composition. At the same time, they reflect the different designs that characterized international EuroCity service during that era.
A distinctive feature of the Roco car set is its design in the 1996 “long-distance red/light gray” color scheme. All four cars feature this design, reflecting a significant change in the visual identity of Deutsche Bahn.
Starting in 1996, DB AG began phasing out the Deutsche Bundesbahn product colors that had been introduced only about ten years earlier. The color change was implemented with great haste. In long-distance service, passenger cars were given a light gray paint scheme with a traffic-red window band. This design replaced the previously used “Orient Red,” which faded quickly.
While long-distance cars appeared in light gray with a traffic-red window band, locomotives and commuter trains were given a uniform traffic-red color scheme. The Roco EC-25 car set incorporates this new design of the long-distance cars, bringing a characteristic look of Era V to your H0 layout.
The EC “Franz Liszt” connected several European countries and required passenger cars suitable for such service. All four cars featured in the Roco set are multi-voltage compatible and suitable for use throughout Europe.
This feature underscores the international character of the prototype. The route between Cologne and Budapest traversed various rail networks and was jointly operated by several railway administrations. Thus, the car set represents not only a specific EuroCity but also cooperation in European long-distance rail service.
The rolling stock of the EuroCity changed over the course of its operational history. Starting in May 1999, Deutsche Bahn once again provided the rolling stock. This included the Bpmbdzf 297 IC control car, which had been delivered starting in 1997.
In this context, west of Vienna, the previously used Class 103 locomotives were replaced by Class 101 locomotives. On the eastern section of the route, an ÖBB Class 1014 electric locomotive took over the hauling duties as scheduled.
There were also changes regarding the dining cars. Since the modernization of 20 DB dining cars in Italy was delayed, existing WRmh 132-class cars continued to be used for the time being.
These different vehicles and operational changes make the EC “Franz Liszt” an interesting model for designing international express train services on the model railroad.
All four cars in the Roco 6200272 set are equipped with interior furnishings. This extends the design of the models into the passenger compartment as well. For model railroad enthusiasts who wish to add lighting to their passenger cars, there is the option to retrofit interior lighting.
The Roco interior lighting with part number 4000005 is specified for this purpose. The cars also feature NEM 362 coupler sockets with close-coupling kinematics. Additional technical specifications are listed in the “Features” section.
The Roco 6200272 car set combines four different EuroCity cars with the history of a significant international long-distance rail service. The distinctive 1996 color scheme, the various car types, and the route between Cologne and Budapest make this set particularly appealing to enthusiasts of European express trains.
Whether you want to recreate the EC 25 “Franz Liszt” or expand your collection with select passenger cars from Deutsche Bahn AG, this set provides the perfect foundation for Era V international long-distance rail service.
