Description

Edition model

About the model: The 231 E 34 steam locomotive is in the design of the French State Railways, comes from Era III and is equipped with a digital interface. The model is factory equipped with a sound decoder. The locomotive is driven by 2 axles and 2 are equipped with traction tires. All other details about the model can be found under the features.

About the prototype: The 231 E series arose from the need to construct powerful steam locomotives for the increasingly heavy French express trains after World War I. The locomotives were designed to be used in the French railroads. Instead of expensive new developments, André Chapelon was commissioned by the Paris-Orleans Railway to rework existing Pacific-type steam locomotives to meet the new requirements. The engineer achieved the required performance increases and fuel savings mainly through improvements in thermodynamics. Success proved him right: the modified locomotive reached test speeds of up to 174 kilometers per hour, and in everyday service it still topped out at a proud 130 kilometers per hour. With a 50 percent increase in power and a simultaneous reduction in fuel costs, Chapelon turned the old steam locomotives into future-proof express locomotives.
