Roco 70063 electric locomotive E 52 03, DB, Ep. III (incl. sound) Product Details

Description

The DRG procured a heavy electric locomotive to haul long passenger trains on the electrified Bavarian main lines. Out of numerous designs, a 2'BB2' locomotive was chosen, which was to have the same motors as the planned BR E 91 freight locomotive. This new design departed from the previous design of electric locomotives with a slow-running large motor and opted for four smaller electric motors. Each drive unit group has two motors. A countershaft drives a jackshaft via inclined crank rods, which is coupled to two driving axles by coupling rods. The locomotive, which at 140 tons was one of the heaviest electric locomotives ever built in Germany, had an output of 2,200 kW and a top speed of 90 km/h.

The manufacturers delivered the locomotives in 1924/1925 to the DRG's Bavarian Group Administration, which put them into service as class EP 5 with the numbers 21 501-535. In 1927 they were given the designation E 52 01-35. The 29 units remaining with the Bundesbahn after the war were designated as class 152 from 1968. In February 1973, the DB retired the last representative of this class, the 152 014.
