At the beginning of the 1970s, Linz was still a steam locomotive Eldorado with locomotives of the 50, 52, 77 and 93 series. Apart from the main or partially repaired machines, the others were mostly in a rather dilapidated condition, i.e. rusty and dirty.
A group of young lads - later co-founders of the Austrian Society for Railway History - set about optimizing the appearance of individual steam locomotives. The 77.66 was a particular highlight in terms of color scheme, receiving a "Länderbahn" paint job. Black boiler, green water tanks and driver's cab, red wheels, shiny wheel rims and boiler rings. Although this livery had never been used on old Austrian locomotives or locomotives from the time of the First Republic, the youngsters liked it and word quickly got around among railroad enthusiasts and photographers about the gems running on non-electrified lines in Upper Austria.
The 77.28, which was added later, was given the same colorful appearance as the 77.66 and kept it for a long time after it was owned by ÖGEG. However, it was returned to its original ÖBB livery after its last general inspection at the latest.
Even though the two "colorful" 77s were never historically consistent, they are still a piece of Austrian railroad history because they are still in service in this color scheme.
