Starting in 1928, a total of 520 class 64 locomotives were put into service. The 90 km/h locomotives were modeled on the design principle of the standard steam locomotives, which made it easier to supply spare parts. The locomotives were used primarily on branch lines and to haul passenger trains as well as light freight trains.
At the time of the conversion to computer numbers on January 1, 1968, the Deutsche Bundesbahn still had 52 of them in its preservation stock. In contrast to the DR locomotives, which were used primarily in the northern lowlands, the 64s of the Bundesbahn were used exclusively south of the Main line after 64 446 was transferred from Bw Hamburg-Rothenburgsort to Bw Plattling on April 30, 1966.
