Description

7100027 H0 Steam locomotive 86 1617-9, DR, Era IV: Versatile branch line locomotive of the German State Railroad

The 7100027 H0 steam loc omotive 86 1617-9 from the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) is an exact replica of one of the best-known steam locomotives for branch line traffic. With numerous details and an authentic representation, this model brings the fascination of Era IV to your model railroad layout.

The prototype: The class 86 - universal talent on branch and main lines

Between 1928 and 1943, a total of 775 class 86 locomotives were delivered to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft by almost all German locomotive factories. These powerful 1,000 hp locomotives were designed for speeds of 70 to 80 km/h, which qualified them not only for branch line operation, but also for use on main and feeder lines.

After the Second World War, 164 locomotives of this series were still in service in the GDR. Locomotive 86 1617-9 was based in the Reichsbahndirektion (Rbd) Dresden at the Bahnbetriebswerk (Bw) Aue. Its time in service ended with the gradual retirement of the class from 1973. The model shown here shows the locomotive with the ÜK driver's cab (transitional war locomotive driver's cab) and long cut-out water boxes.

Era IV: Steam locomotives in the service of the Deutsche Reichsbahn

Era IV (1965-1990) was a phase of transition in which steam locomotives such as the class 86 were gradually replaced by diesel and electric locomotives. In the GDR, however, steam locomotives remained in service for longer due to economic conditions. The class 86 remained an important mainstay for regional and freight traffic until the 1970s.

Design and technical details

The model of the 86 1617-9 impresses with its precise reproduction and numerous details. It has an ÜK driver's cab, long cut-out water boxes and finely detailed metal wheel sets. The lighting is provided by maintenance-free LEDs with a light change depending on the direction of travel (white). The filigree design of the boiler, driver's cab and running gear gives the locomotive an authentic look.

Technology and workmanship

The locomotive is designed for direct current systems (DC) and has a NEM coupling shaft with close coupling kinematics. With a length over buffers (LüP) of 160 mm, the model is ideal for H0 layouts with a branch line character. The minimum radius of 360 mm also allows operation on layouts with tight curve radii. The high-quality workmanship of plastic and metal ensures a long service life and reliable operating characteristics.

Care and maintenance

The model requires little maintenance, but should be cleaned regularly. Wheels and moving parts can be lightly oiled to ensure smooth operation. The LED lighting and electronics are durable, but should be protected from moisture. Regular inspection of the clutches and drive parts guarantees long-term operational reliability.

Conclusion and purchase recommendation

The 7100027 H0 steam locomotive 86 1617-9 is a fascinating model that authentically recreates the history of the branch line locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. With its detailed design, robust technology and historical significance, it is an ideal addition to any H0 layout. This model is a must for collectors and model railroaders who want to experience the charm of Era IV.
