Description

Roco 7100031 H0 Steam Locomotive Class 86 200 DRG Era II – Classic tender locomotive with riveted water tanks

Are you looking for a distinctive steam locomotive for your H0 model railroad layout that will allow you to authentically recreate the rail traffic of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft? The Roco 7100031 DRG Class 86 200 steam locomotive brings the fascinating atmosphere of Era II to your layout. As a special variant, this model is available for the first time with short-cut water tanks in a riveted design. Fine metal wheel sets, prototypical running wheel brakes, and a direction-dependent two-light headlight underscore the historical design. With its five-pole motor, four powered axles, and a PluX22 digital interface, this classic tender locomotive combines railroad history with modern model railroading technology.

Prototype: Class 86 – Versatile Standard Steam Locomotive of the DRG

The Class 86 steam locomotives are among the best-known German standard tender locomotives. Between 1928 and 1943, nearly all major German locomotive manufacturers delivered a total of 775 locomotives of this class. The locomotives, with a power output of approximately 1,000 PS, were developed specifically for versatile use on branch lines. However, thanks to their design for speeds of about 70 to 80 km/h, they could also be used on main lines and feeder lines. With their 1'D1' wheel arrangement and side-mounted water tanks, these locomotives became iconic vehicles of German rail transport. The Roco 86 200 depicts one such locomotive in service with the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft during Era II.

Special variant with riveted water tanks

A special highlight of the Roco 7100031 is the first-ever reproduction of the short-cut water tanks in a riveted design. This distinctive design gives the steam locomotive a unique appearance and sets it apart from other variants of the Class 86 series. The simulated rivets emphasize the historical construction and really bring out the classic design of this standard-class locomotive. In addition, the model features wheel brakes and finely crafted metal wheel sets. Etched nameplates are included for some parts to further enhance the signage. These features make the DRG 86 200 an interesting addition for discerning steam locomotive collectors.

Fine metal wheel sets and characteristic undercarriage design

The Roco BR 86 200 impresses with the meticulous design of its classic steam locomotive undercarriage. Particularly noteworthy are the finely crafted metal wheel sets, which reinforce the prototype-accurate appearance of the tender locomotive. Another characteristic detail is the replica running-wheel brakes. Together with the side water tanks and the typical boiler design, these elements create an attractive replica of this well-known standard-class steam locomotive. The compact design of the BR 86 is particularly impressive during slow runs through a historic station or while shunting in front of a freight shed.

Model technology with a five-pole motor and flywheel

The Roco 7100031 is designed for analog DC operation on H0 two-wire layouts. A five-pole motor, combined with a flywheel, ensures smooth running characteristics and promotes quiet operation. A total of four axles are driven, while one axle is equipped with traction tires to improve traction. This makes the model well-suited for use with shorter passenger and freight trains. With a length over buffers of 160 mm, the steam locomotive has compact dimensions. The minimum curve radius of 358 mm allows for use on appropriately designed H0 track layouts.

PluX22 digital interface and prototypical two-light headlight

Although the Roco BR 86 200 is shipped as an analog DC locomotive, it already features an electrical PluX22 digital interface. This allows the model to be retrofitted with a suitable digital decoder as needed and prepared for digital model railroad operation. A digital or sound decoder is not factory-installed in this version. Particularly well-suited for Era II is the prototypical two-light headlight, which is equipped with LED technology and changes direction depending on the direction of travel. This lighting complements the classic appearance of the steam locomotive and creates an authentic effect while in motion.

Versatile Applications on Branch Lines and Main Lines

The Class 86 was a true all-rounder in real life. Its primary area of operation was on branch lines, where it hauled both passenger and freight trains. At the same time, these powerful tender locomotives could be used on main lines and feeder lines. The Roco 7100031 is therefore ideally suited for various H0 train formations from Era II. The DRG 86 200 pairs particularly well with historic two-axle passenger cars, classic covered freight cars, open cars, and mixed local freight trains. To connect with compatible cars, the model features a NEM 362 coupler housing with close-coupling kinematics. Whether at a branch station, at the head of a short passenger train, or shunting in a freight yard—the BR 86 offers numerous possibilities for varied model railroad operation.

A special collector’s model for fans of the DRG and Era II

The Roco 7100031 combines the history of one of Germany’s most famous standardized tender locomotives with a highly detailed H0 model. In particular, the first-ever body variant featuring short, riveted water tanks makes the BR 86 200 an attractive addition for collectors. The fine metal wheel sets, the running wheel brakes, and the etched nameplates (some included) underscore the special character of this model. Thanks to the five-pole motor, the flywheel, and the PluX22 interface, the locomotive is also ideal for regular operation. Expand your collection of historic steam locomotives with the Roco BR 86 200 of the DRG and bring a fascinating piece of German railway history to your H0 model railroad layout!
