Are you looking for a classic Deutsche Bundesbahn steam locomotive that captivates with its elegant appearance and unique railway history? The Roco 7100057 DB Class 24 058 steam locomotive brings the charm of the 1950s and 1960s to your H0 model railroad layout. As a replica of the famous, iconic locomotive 24 058, the model features small Witte air deflectors, a firebox door without a central latch, and a characteristic trailing tender design. Of particular interest: After a long absence, this popular version is once again available in the Roco lineup. With a five-pole motor, flywheel, and PluX22 digital interface, the locomotive combines historic railroad atmosphere with modern model railroad technology.
The Class 24 steam locomotives were originally developed for passenger service on branch lines. As trailing-tender locomotives of the 1'C h2 type, they had an axle load of 15 metric tons, making them suitable even for lines with limited load-bearing capacity. In terms of design, they were closely related to the Class 64 tender locomotive. The superheated steam twin-engine engine developed a power output of approximately 920 PSi and enabled a top speed of 90 km/h. As a result, these locomotives could be used not only on branch lines but also in passenger service on main lines. With a driving wheel diameter of 1,500 mm and its distinctive design, the BR 24 was one of the most popular passenger locomotives in German railway history.
After World War II, 47 Class 24 locomotives remained in the western occupation zones. Of these, the Deutsche Bundesbahn returned a total of 42 locomotives to service. Over time, some of these locomotives were fitted with smaller Witte deflectors, which significantly altered their appearance compared to the original design featuring large Wagner deflectors. The locomotives remained in service with the DB until 1967. The Roco 7100057, representing the 24 058, is a particularly interesting locomotive from this Bundesbahn era. As a replica of this well-known, iconic locomotive, it is ideal for historic passenger trains of Era III.
A special highlight of the Roco BR 24 058 is its design featuring small Witte air deflectors. This characteristic design has returned to the product lineup after a long absence and gives the steam locomotive its elegant, unmistakable silhouette. In contrast to the large Wagner air deflectors, the smaller Witte deflectors appear particularly delicate and allow the locomotive’s boiler to stand out more prominently. Another important detail is the firebox door without a central latch. Combined with the historic DB design, this creates a model characteristic of the early Bundesbahn era. For an additional visual enhancement, parts of the locomotive’s lettering are included as etched parts.
The Roco 7100057 is designed for analog DC operation on H0 two-wire layouts. A five-pole motor, combined with a flywheel, ensures smooth running characteristics and promotes quiet operation. Two axles are powered, while two axles are equipped with traction tires to improve traction. This makes the model well-suited for use with appropriate historic passenger trains. With a length over the buffers of 196 mm and a minimum curve radius of 358 mm, the BR 24 058 can be used on appropriately designed H0 track layouts. The combination of a compact trailing tender design and modern drive technology makes this locomotive particularly appealing for branch line layouts.
The Roco BR 24 058 is shipped as an analog DC locomotive and already features an electrical PluX22 digital interface. This allows the model to be retrofitted with a suitable digital decoder as needed and prepared for digital model railroad operation. A digital or sound decoder is not factory-installed in this version. For prototypical lighting, the locomotive features a direction-dependent three-light LED headlight at both ends of the vehicle. Especially when entering a historic station or during a trip at dusk, the lighting emphasizes the characteristic appearance of the Bundesbahn steam locomotive.
The Roco 7100057 is ideal for H0 model railroads focused on the German Federal Railroad and Era III. The BR 24 058 pairs particularly well with historic converted cars, three-axle passenger cars, and classic branch-line passenger trains. Shorter passenger trains on main lines also fit the historical operating environment of this versatile locomotive series. A model railroad layout featuring small stations, rural stops, and a classic steam locomotive depot provides the ideal backdrop. A close-coupling mechanism is provided for connecting the locomotive to the tender. Additionally, the model features a NEM 362 coupling shaft with close-coupling kinematics, allowing suitable passenger cars to be easily coupled to the train.
The Roco 7100057 combines the history of a popular German standard-series steam locomotive with an attractive H0-scale model. In particular, the small Witte air deflectors, the firebox door without a central latch, and the replica of the famous 24 058 make this version an interesting collector’s item. Thanks to its five-pole motor, flywheel, and built-in PluX22 interface, the model is suitable for both classic analog model railroaders and those planning to digitize their layout later. For enthusiasts of historic Bundesbahn trains, fans of Era III, and collectors of the Class 24 series, this steam locomotive is an excellent choice. Get the Roco BR 24 058 with small Witte air deflectors and bring a touch of classic Bundesbahn romance to your H0 model railroad layout!
