Are you looking for an elegant steam locomotive for your H0 model railroad layout that will allow you to authentically recreate the historic passenger service of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft? The Roco 7100068 DRG Class 24 040 steam locomotive brings the fascinating railway atmosphere of Era II to your tracks. With its characteristic Wagner air deflectors, the firebox door with central latch, and the classic trailing tender design, it embodies the typical design of German standard-type steam locomotives. The five-pole motor with flywheel, the PluX22 digital interface, and the direction-dependent LED triple-light headlight complement the historic appearance with modern model railroad technology.
The Class 24 steam locomotives were developed as part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft’s standardized locomotive program for passenger service on branch lines. As trailing-tender locomotives of the 1'C h2 type, they had an axle load of 15 metric tons and were therefore suitable for routes where heavier locomotives could not be used. The design was intended to closely resemble that of the Class 64 tender locomotive. The superheated steam twin-engine system delivered approximately 920 PSi and enabled a top speed of 90 km/h. This allowed the locomotives to be used not only on branch lines but also in passenger service on main lines. The diameter of the driving wheel on the prototype was 1,500 mm.
The Roco BR 24 040 represents a classic standard-design steam locomotive in its operational condition during Era II. Particularly striking are the large Wagner air deflectors, which significantly shape the locomotive’s appearance. On the full-scale prototype, these deflectors served to favorably influence the flow of smoke while the locomotive was in motion and to improve visibility for the locomotive crew. Another characteristic detail is the firebox door with a central latch. This unique design gives the locomotive’s front end an unmistakable look and makes the model an interesting addition to historic DRG train formations.
The Roco 7100068 impresses with its prototypical design of a classic German tender-type steam locomotive. The distinctive boiler shape, the Wagner air deflectors, and the firebox door with central latch underscore the historical character of the BR 24. The characteristic undercarriage with its three coupled axles also contributes to the authentic overall impression. For model railroaders who place particular value on high-quality markings, parts of the locomotive’s nameplates are additionally included as etched parts. The elegant lines of this standard-series steam locomotive are particularly striking when pulled by a historic passenger train.
The Roco BR 24 040 is designed for analog DC operation on H0 two-wire layouts. A five-pole motor, combined with a flywheel, ensures smooth running characteristics and promotes quiet operation. Two axles are driven, while two axles are equipped with traction tires to improve traction. This makes the locomotive ideal for use in front of compatible historic passenger trains. With a length over buffers of 196 mm and a minimum curve radius of 358 mm, the locomotive can be used on appropriately designed H0 track layouts.
Although the Roco 7100068 is shipped as an analog model, it already includes a PluX22 digital interface. This allows the locomotive to be retrofitted with a suitable digital decoder as needed and prepared for digital model railroading. A digital or sound decoder is not factory-installed in this version. For prototypical lighting, the model features a direction-dependent LED three-light headlight at both ends of the locomotive. The lighting complements the steam locomotive’s historical design and creates a striking effect when traveling through stations and along branch lines.
The Roco BR 24 040 is ideal for H0 model railroad layouts focused on the Deutsche Reichsbahn and Era II. The steam locomotive pairs particularly well with historic three-axle passenger cars, classic branch-line cars, and period-appropriate passenger train sets. The Roco Passenger Car Set 6200296, featuring four Prussian three-axle cars, also offers an interesting addition. Together with the Roco Mail and Parcel Car 6200299, you can assemble a varied historical passenger train. A close-coupling mechanism is provided for connecting the locomotive to the tender. Additionally, the model features a NEM 362 coupling shaft with close-coupling kinematics, allowing compatible cars to be easily integrated.
The Roco 7100068 combines the history of a versatile German standard-series steam locomotive with a meticulous H0-scale model. The distinctive Wagner air deflectors, the firebox door with central latch, and the partially included etched nameplates give the BR 24 040 a special charm. Thanks to the five-pole motor, the flywheel, and the PluX22 interface, the locomotive is suitable for both classic analog model railroaders and those planning to digitize their layout later. This model is an excellent choice, especially for enthusiasts of historic passenger trains, DRG collectors, and fans of Era II. Expand your steam locomotive collection with the Roco BR 24 040 and bring the charm of the German Reichsbahn era to your H0 model railroad layout!
